The Position Benefits Supplemental QuestionsThe City of Berkeley is accepting applications for Registered Nurse! The Health, Housing & Community Services Department (HHCS) has nurses in both the Public Health and Mental Health Divisions. This classification is responsible for providing nursing care to patients in a City out patient clinic or in their homes, providing direct nursing services including assessments, examinations, diagnostic testing and treatment planning under the supervision of a physician.In the Mental Health DivisionIncumbents are expected to have a solid foundational knowledge of psychiatric illnesses, substance use disorders, and general medical conditions. The ideal candidate would be able to perform comprehensive nursing assessments of both physical and mental health conditions, conduct thorough mental status examinations, and demonstrate a working knowledge of psychotherapeutic treatments and psychotropic medications. Incumbents provide services in the clinic, in patients’ homes, and in homeless encampments.In the Public Health DivisionIncumbents work in a clinic setting and are expected to have knowledge and experience in first aid, immunizations, TB skin testing and reading, and general medical conditions. The ideal candidate would be able to perform comprehensive nursing assessments of physical conditions and administer first aid, as well as coordinate and deliver immunization services, including medication inventory, reporting and management of provider relations.Typical duties include:* Performing selected diagnostic tests, under standardized procedures and giving prescribed treatments;* Identifying physical, mental and emotional problems;* Referring individuals and families to appropriate medical care and other resources and performing related follow up;* Coordinating clinic services with private, public and voluntary health and social services within the community;* Developing and implementing nursing care plans for patients and evaluating the needs of patients and families;* Giving immunizations and conducting immunization clinics, performing TB skin testing, venereal disease examinations, conducting communicable disease clinics and providing patient education on communicable diseases;* Assisting patients in need of follow up with physicians and hospitals;* Giving injections;* Preparing and maintaining detailed documentation of patient visits and referrals and reporting communicable diseases to appropriate medical and community agencies;* Initiating preventive and rehabilitative nursing procedures appropriate to the patient’s care and safety;* Supervising and training nursing support personnel in proper patient care;* Maintaining current knowledge of matters affecting patient care and clinic services and recommending policy and procedural improvements to City management.* Performing related duties as assigned.Required Qualifications: ExperienceTwo (2) years of professional nursing experience, preferably in a public health setting.Other RequirementsSome positions may require possession of a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record. Positions may require bilingual or bicultural background. Must be licensed as a Registered Nurse in California. Must be willing to work evenings or weekends.Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of: Principles and practices of nursing and paramedical procedures, including medical terminology and clinical routines and equipment; Principles and practices of health maintenance and illness prevention and the effect of physical, social and emotional environments on health; Nutritional needs of all age groups; Child growth and development; Normal and abnormal behavioral patterns; Principles and techniques of history taking and patient teaching and counseling; Community medical and social agencies and resources; Principles and techniques of drug administration and its affect on patients; Communicable disease control; Rules and regulations affecting the practice of nursing, including the California Nurse Practice Act.Ability to: Perform nursing assessments, identify medical, social and emotional problems and prepare nursing care plans and/or make appropriate referrals; Perform first aid, give injections, and perform other skilled nursing services; Prepare and maintain organized, detailed and accurate records of patient visits and findings; Recognize and respect the impact of cultural differences on health care practices; Apply teaching principles and provide patient education and counseling; Establish and maintain effective working relationships with clinic staff, physicians, patients, families and community medical and social service agencies.Application Process:Applicants must submit the following:* CITY OF BERKELEY EMPLOYMENT APPLICATION* RESPONSES TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL QUESTIONNAIREAll materials must be received in our office no later than the closing date, at 5:00 p.m. PST.
