Research Scientist – Biobank Specialist

Job Description:

We are looking for a highly motivated research scientist to generate and validate findings from our computational multi-omics pipelines using biobanked samples and cell models. In this role, you will plan and conduct experiments using basic molecular biology and cell culture techniques. Specifically, the role includes isolation of nucleic acids and proteins from frozen biobanked samples for downstream use in next generation sequencing. You will also perform gene over-expression and knockdown experiments in mammalian cell culture models, protein immunoblots, PCR and gene expression analysis and plate-reader based assays. You will have potential to derive cell lines from fresh tissue. Additional responsibilities include keeping and organizing inventory of biobanked samples and laboratory records, as well as re-ordering laboratory supplies and providing general lab maintenance where indicated. Being able to contribute excellent science and work as a team player in a laboratory environment is key to success in this role.

Skills required:

  • Master’s degree in Genetics, Molecular or Cellular Biology or a related field and 2-6 years of scientific experience in academic or industry research.
  • Previous extensive experience with mammalian cell culture
  • Expert in extraction and handling of RNA from frozen or biobanked tissue, in particular working with irreplaceable or limited samples
  • High level of proficiency with molecular biology techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to design, optimize, troubleshoot and interpret experiments
  • Good organizational and computer skills
  • Ability to keep accurate records of experiments in an electronic laboratory notebook
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse group of staff

Skills preferred:

  • PhD with thesis research incorporating molecular biology techniques
  • Experience deriving cell lines from fresh tissue
  • Experience with next generation sequencing library preparation
